Fashion & Food!

Hello dolls!

I thought it would be fun to share some of my new favorite pieces from my closet and some yummy things I've been lucky enough to eat lately.

For starters, these 4 items have been my summer essentials. The bag is a Michael Kors Hamilton in tan and brown. I got the sandals from Body Central for only $15(!!) and the fedora and pink aviators are both just great to have on hand.
I picked up this monogrammed t-shirt with a chevron pocket last weekend in Virginia. I'm not usually much of a t-shirt girl, but I'd been wanting one of these for awhile. I love how cute it is and had honestly forgotten how comfy t-shirts can be!
I've also definitely been overdoing the maxi skirts/crop top combo trend lately.  Maybe its the thought of childbearing approaching, but this summer I've felt compelled to wear crop tops every chance I have, while I still can.
Fedora and pink aviators - overdoing it and simultaneously loving it.
I bought this fabulous little crop top in March and still haven't had a chance to wear it, but maybe something where this is appropriate will come up soon. In my boring, lawyer life though, I seriously doubt it.

I just bought this pink and brown chevron wrap and I'm obsessed.

I've been meaning to upload this for awhile, but kept forgetting, but my friend Sarah's mom sewed this monogrammed chevron apron for me, from scratch! How adorable is it?! I think she could seriously start a business making these.

And what would a white girl's blog post on fashion be without a group duck face pic? This pic was taken at my best friend's glow in the dark bowling birthday party last weekend. Between the bar, the lighting and the music, it felt more like a bowling alley than a club. It was a really cool experience!

Last but not least, here are a few updated closet pics.

Now, on to the good stuff: the food.

I made these meatless, low-ish carb tacos the other night and LOVED them. Instead of hamburger, I used Morningstar Farms soy meat and instead of tortillas I used iceberg lettuce. I made long wild grain rice for a side and put avocado, corn, tomatoes, red onions, black beans and mozzarella on top. Major noms, if I do say so myself.
I also made a chopped salad, which took every bit of 2 hours to chop everything (which is exactly why I don't cook), but it was almost worth it, it was so good. It included: iceberg, cilantro, avocado, mozzarella, cheddar, red onions, white corn, yellow corn, red peppers, yellow peppers, orange peppers, croutons, tomatoes, black beans and southwest ranch dressing.

Updates from around the BDH!

Hello Barbie dolls!

Now that all of our summer travel, volunteering and work madness is behind us, hubby and I have finally had some spare time to pour some love into the BDH. We've bought a few things, painted, tweaked and crafted. Here are some of the photos from our updates. I'm also adding them to the home tour page.

I've added vintage Barbie art and four hooks on one of the walls in my clothing closet to display my current favorite outfits. The art was REALLY expensive if you were going to buy it piece by piece, so I instead ordered a vintage Barbie art calendar for $10 and just trimmed down the pictures from 12x12 to 8x11!

We bought this cute black and white trellis rug for the sitting area in the kitchen.

We added this iron scroll to our oven hood. It was slightly too tall, so of course hubby took it into the garage and was able to neatly make it smaller. He amazes me!

Our two night stands in the master bedroom are done as far as décor goes. This is his. Mine is identical but with a photo of him from our wedding. <3

Here's another sneak peak at our new 11 ft dining room table that hubby made with his bare hands last week out of laurel poplar wood. Post on the table and full reveal coming soon!

We made this 4 ft wide canvas art for above our guest bedroom for under $10! I bought some fabric on clearance then had hubby build a cheap wooden frame (it took under 15 minutes) and just staple gunned the fabric to the frame, and voila! We now have art that takes up a large chunk of that wall and also is perfectly on theme with the pink and gray room.

More photos of our downstairs guest bedroom.

Over the summer we've completely revamped the previously tan and empty library. We painted it dark brown, added curtains sewn by my mom and bought this oversized upholstered chair from Overstock.com. We also added the stately gold frames to the walls. We also ordered and installed the 2 inch wooden blinds for all three windows. They were pricey, but definitely add to the room's dark, old world library effect.

That's all for now in terms of updates barbies! Check back soon for a guest post by Ross on how he built our new, 11 ft Restoration Hardware inspired dining room table from scratch in a week for under $200!

Shoe Closet!!

Have you ever heard the story about how the Taj Mahal was built? If you haven't, you should look it up. The cliffnotes version is that an Indian emperor built it to honor his wife. Not to compare my new closet to the Taj Mahal, but that's how I feel about the carpentry magic my husband just orchestrated in my closet.

He spent 2 weeks designing, cutting, measuring, painting and installing the frame and shelves for the closet. He's an engineer and very meticulous, so he took his time to make sure everything was perfect. I helped a little, mostly with painting, but he did 99% of the work on this masterpiece.

He finally finished it last night and I've had a giant smile on my face since. I stayed up late putting all of my shoes on it, which, to my surprise, didn't take very long. I couldn't be happier with the way they fit and with the way it looks. He's my shoe hero these days!

And here she is doing exactly what she was designed to do: holding my shoe collection!

Happy, happy moment at the BDH! Stay tuned for pics of the clothes closet when it gets done. xox!

More Closet Inspiration!

Even though we've now finalized the floorplan of our master closet, a girl can still be inspired by these fabulous spaces, especially since we still have to work out all of the shelving layouts and color scheme.

Are these closets a dream or what?

Also, don't you love this idea? You frame shopping bags from your favorite stores as closet decor. I've been saving a Dior bag and an Elaine Turner bag from Houston for this very purpose!

**UPDATE: Now that we've moved in and hubby had time to build it, you can view my completed shoe closet here barbies: BDH Shoe Closet
